"We all have a home in a ventral vagal state of safety and connection."

Deb Dana

Coming Home is a course on mapping, navigating and shaping your autonomic nervous system. You'll be led through structures to map your own system and learn to recognise states of protection and connection.

We'll adventure together through your inner landscape, find the ways to navigate and the paths that lead you home.

In this course specially adapted for therapists and coaches, you'll learn how to bring this important work to clients through deepening your understanding of your own system.

"Coming Home helped me to understand why a task can be easy one day and impossible another. I'm not just making it up or being dramatic. It makes sense. Understanding this has helped me to be kinder to myself."

Kim
What is the autonomic nervous system?

We all have an autonomic nervous system. It operates mostly below the level of conscious awareness, constantly asking the question, am I safe?
If there are cues of safety we feel secure and connected, sure of ourselves, calm and grounded, able to make decisions and manage our lives.
If there are cues of danger, the nervous system takes us into a state of protection.
This might be a high energy state of anxiety, sympathetic arousal, overthinking and urgency where we feel the need to move. It might be a dark, frozen place of stillness, immobility and silence, a dorsal vagal state of shutdown.

Why learn about it?

This system is always working in service of our survival. We can't stop it, and we don't want to, but we can learn to become active operators. We can learn to track our state, notice where our biology has taken us, and regulate our system. We can understand why we react or overreact to some situations.
We can find ways to calm and manage the system which throws us into panic or makes us lose our words at the worst moments. We can learn why some situations touch and awaken old pain, and how to manage the cues of safety and danger that our system is searching for.

Teaching clients explicitly about working with the nervous system is foundational work to stabilise and expand the window of tolerance, and you'll finish this course fully equipped to confidently bring this work into your sessions alongside your current modality.
We'll also talk about how your own body is a powerful tool in your work, and how becoming attuned to the messages of your nervous system supports you in aligning with your client's inner world.

“Incredibly deep experience, simple things that have changed how I think and feel, and great new friends! I love the journal that I filled in, it's like a letter from me on a good day to me on a bad day reminding me what helps and that it's ok and it will pass.”
Rachel
What will we do?

We'll work together as a small group (12 participants maximum) on Zoom over eight weeks.

You'll be led through a series of structures designed to help you map your own system and discover your own cues of safety and danger, and how to regulate your system.

There will be taught sections, lots of space for discussion and feedback as a group, and a workbook to accompany the course. You'll fill this in during and between sessions to create a user manual for your autonomic nervous system, a record of the tools you've learned that support you.

You'll also have access to more copies of the workbook for use with clients. Calls will be recorded to give you lifetime access to the taught pieces.

At the end of the course you'll have a clear understanding of how your biology affects your mood, emotions and ability to function and connect.

You'll have a tool kit of strategies to share to regulate and shape your system, and you'll know the way home to a ventral vagal state of calm and connected safety.

This is what we will be covering!

Week 1 – Mapping

This week we'll begin with learning the three states of the nervous system, what they feel like for you and how you recognise them. We'll cover some foundations of theory and the vagus nerve in the body with somatic practice.

Week 2 – Mapping

We'll explore the three states in different ways to build familiarity and our ability to tune in and listen. The nervous system works below the level of conscious awareness, but by turning towards it we can bring it into our awareness. This moves us towards choice in how we feel and behave.

Week 3 – Navigating

This week we move from getting familiar with the states and the emotions that they bring, to changing them, moving from storm to calm, regulating your system. We'll talk about the longing for connection and how the social engagement system works to keep us safe in relationship to others, and what triggers our states of protection.

Week 4 – Navigating

We'll continue to work on moving between states, changing how you feel without reacting or repressing emotions. This week we're looking at the resources, tools and strategies you have available which can help you move between states and thinking about what you can do alone or with others to self regulate or co-regulate.

Week 5 – Navigating

How we feel and what state is activated depends on the cues our nervous system receives. Cues can be inside the body, outside in the world, or from other people - inside, outside or between, embodied, environmental or interpersonal. This week we'll explore what these are, and how you could change them.

Week 6 – Shaping

The nervous system is always changing in response to the world. Here we'll begin to learn gentle ways to shape the system with intention in the direction of more safety and connection.

Week 7 – Shaping

The process of restorying allows us to change the patterns we have in relating to others and to the world. We see the world through the lens of the nervous system. We tell our stories differently depending on how we're feeling at the time. Bringing awareness to that process allows us to choose what stories we tell about ourselves.

Week 8 – Review and Integration

We look back on the skills that we have learned and troubleshoot issues that come up. We'll check through your book and fill in any gaps, answer any questions and reflect on the process.
